Recycling Program
Though
our organic waste pick-up program our goal is to change cultural
attitudes about garbage in a way that will benefit society, reduce
and divert our solid waste stream, and recycle our natural resources
on a local level.
As
of 2001 it is estimated that 21.6% of Pender County's solid waste
was made up of organic materials. Organic Waste does not decompose
in a Landfill. Any decomposition is anaerobic, meaning lacking oxygen.
This type of decomposition produces methane gases, a large contributor
to ozone depletion and global warming. Pender County is a very desirable
place to live and our population has increased dramatically in the
last eight years. We think this is a very low estimate of the amount
of organic material going to our landfills. Please! Do your part.
Let's turn all this organic waste back into something that will
benefit our planet, not harm it!
